Leake Car Auction sales total more than $10 million
Tulsa, Okla. (June 16, 2008)
The 36th Annual Leake Tulsa Collector Car Auction raked in $10 million in total sales and $20 million in total bids during this year's event, said auction officials today. Held June 6-8 in the QuikTrip Center at Expo Square, thousands of car enthusiasts from Oklahoma and surrounding states attended the locally operated and nationally renowned auction.
The Tulsa auction - one of the top five car auctions in the nation - featured 725 cars across the auction block, including Cadillacs, Corvettes, Camaros, Shelbys, Thunderbirds, Mustangs, Mopars and other vintage, collector, muscle and specialty vehicles. A total of 417 cars were sold during the auction run, with a 58 percent sales rate.
"It's rewarding to experience another successful year in Tulsa," said Richard Sevenoaks, president of Leake Auction Company. "Oklahoma is where the auction began, and we're pleased that Tulsans continue to appreciate the vintage and collector automobiles the auction offers. We try to bring in the most coveted cars in the world, and we want Tulsa to remain part of the Leake Auction Company's rich history."
This year's top selling car was a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 KK2039, which sold for $287,280. Other top cars included a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado which sold for $221,400, a 1954 Buick Skylark which sold for $173,880, 1937 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe which sold for $145,800, a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham which sold for $137,700 and a 1967 Ford Mustang Pro Touring, which sold for $135,000.
Car enthusiasts who were not successful in winning the bid in Tulsa can bid on other collector automobiles when Leake holds its next auction September 20th at Reliant Center in Houston, Texas.
The Leake auctions were first established in Muskogee, OK, in 1964 by James C. Leake Sr. as one of the first car auctions in the country. More than 40 years later, three generations of Leakes have worked for the company and sold more than 30,000 cars. Leake Auction Company currently conducts annual auctions in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Houston. San Antonio will be added to the calendar of auction events in March, 2009.
