Ford Equator Concept Car to Benefit Hurricane Victims
Dallas, TX (October 12, 2005) The ill winds of hurricanes Katrina and Rita are going to blow a chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity to auto enthusiasts at the Kruse-Leake Collector Car Auction in Dallas on Nov. 19. Ford Motor Company and Kruse-Leake are combining to offer something rarely seen in even the most inclusive auction: a genuine concept car.
Ford has donated the Ford Equator, a one-of-a-kind concept vehicle, with the proceeds to be given to the Texas branch of the American Red Cross. Kruse-Leake will donate the buyer premium to the relief effort and will waive all their usual charges to Ford so that the victims of the two hurricanes can get the full benefit of the sale.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to help the people of Texas,” says Leake Auction Co. president Richard Sevenoaks. “Ford has a huge presence in Texas and we are the largest collector car auction in Texas and we hope that by combining our considerable resources we can aid the victims of those two storms.”
The Ford Equator was unveiled at the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It opened the way for the design of today’s Ford F-Series which is not only the best-selling truck in Texas, but the best-selling vehicle in America for the past 23 years.
Being a concept car, the Ford Equator has a host of features not usually seen in production models. While it has approximately the same wheelbase as a Ford F-150 pickup it is closer to the width of a Ford Super Duty pickup. It has an off-road-racing-inspired independent suspension with billet aluminum upper control arms, steel lower arms with all-new geometry for maximum travel, adjustable 32-inch coils over gas-linked shocks and custom machined steering linkage.
Kevlar bumpers, fenders, wheel wells and lower trim panels are nearly indestructible. The specially cut off-road tires are color-keyed to the Serengeti gold body. The doors are cut high and a lower panel can be hydraulically deployed to create a step. In the stowed position the panels provide a watertight barrier for the passenger compartment which features four leather-contoured bucket seats.
Sevenoaks says “Probably fewer than 100 American manufactured concept cars have ever been sold at auction. Usually they are trotted out to auto shows, comments on their features noted, and when their usefulness is at an end they are chopped up. This is one of the few times a concept car has ever been offered for sale. It is a rare opportunity for some collector and its sale will help a number of people who need the help. We are delighted to be joining with the Ford Motor Company to assist our friends and neighbors in need.”
The three-day auction runs Nov 18-20 in Dallas at Dallas Market Hall, 2200 Stemmons Freeway. For further information for bidding or to consign your cars to the Dallas auction, call (800) 722-9942, visit our website at www.leakecar.com, or e-mail: info@leakecar.com.
